SBM Bank Kenya H1 2026: CEO Celebrates 171% Profit
SBM Bank Kenya posted a massive 171% profit increase in H1 2026. CEO Bhartesh Shah explains the digital and customer strategies driving this financial success.

The banking sector in East Africa just got a massive jolt. SBM Bank Kenya recently released its financial results for the first half of 2026. The numbers are nothing short of spectacular. If you follow the region's financial markets, you know a turnaround like this takes serious work.
Profit Before Tax skyrocketed by an astonishing 171 percent, reaching Sh548 million. At the same time, customer deposits surged to Sh94 billion. For a bank that was in a stabilization phase just a couple of years ago, this is a defining moment.
Chief Executive Officer Bhartesh Shah did not hold back his pride. He explained that these figures represent a fundamental shift in how the bank operates.
A Strategy Built on Trust
Shah took over leadership with a clear vision. He wanted to shift SBM Bank from mere survival to scalable, sustainable growth. The H1 2026 results prove his strategy is working.
"These results are about far more than stronger profitability," Shah noted during the announcement. "They demonstrate the continued strengthening of our institution."
He pointed specifically to the growth in deposits. When customers trust a bank, they leave their money there. That Sh94 billion deposit base shows that retail and corporate clients believe in the bank's long-term stability.
This renewed confidence echoes broader financial recoveries happening across the continent. For example, we recently saw how macroeconomic adjustments helped when the naira strengthens and dollar liquidity improves in West Africa. Confidence drives banking success, no matter the region.

Cleaning Up the Books
You cannot grow a bank sustainably if bad loans are dragging you down. SBM Bank made aggressive moves to clean up its balance sheet.
A year ago, their Gross Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio sat at a troubling 32.4 percent. By the end of June 2026, they slashed that number down to 17.3 percent. That is a massive improvement in asset quality.
With a cleaner book, the bank confidently increased its lending. Net loans and advances jumped by 18 percent to Sh54.1 billion. They are actively pushing money into households and small businesses across Kenya.
According to The Star Kenya, net interest income also rose to Sh2.2 billion during this period. The bank kept a tight grip on funding costs while successfully expanding its loan book.
Betting Big on Technology
Banking today is a technology game. SBM Bank knows this well. They recently became the first bank in the world to implement the Oracle FLEXCUBE 14.8 core banking platform.
This isn't just back-office plumbing. The upgrade translates directly to better customer experiences. They eliminated fees on PesaLink transfers up to Sh1 million on their mobile platforms. By removing transaction friction, they encourage customers to use digital channels daily.
This digital push led to a 54 percent spike in non-funded income, hitting Sh1.39 billion. As financial institutions embrace technology, we see similar movements in capital markets, like the anticipated NGX fintech listing on the Nigerian stock market. Tech adoption is driving revenue everywhere.
Looking Ahead
Total assets for SBM Bank Kenya now stand at Sh109.9 billion. Shareholders' equity strengthened to Sh11.1 billion. Capital and liquidity ratios sit comfortably above Central Bank of Kenya requirements.
Bhartesh Shah and his team aren't slowing down. They plan to expand financing for small and medium-sized enterprises. They are also specifically targeting climate-resilient and sustainable investments.
The first half of 2026 proved that SBM Bank is back on solid ground. They executed a tough turnaround. Now, they are ready to scale.
