Cars Destroyed as Thugs Attack APC Campaign in Katsina
Armed thugs attacked an APC campaign rally in Katsina, destroying several vehicles. The violence highlights ongoing security threats in Nigerian politics.

Political violence reared its ugly head again this week. Armed thugs ambushed an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Katsina state. The aftermath left several campaign vehicles completely destroyed. Shattered glass and twisted metal littered the rally grounds. Supporters ran for their lives as hostile youths stormed the venue.
This wasn't a random street clash. It was a calculated attack meant to intimidate. Eyewitnesses reported seeing men wielding cutlasses, stones, and heavy clubs. They targeted the political convoy directly. They smashed windshields, ripped off side mirrors, and caved in car doors. Local police arrived late, managing only to secure the immediate wreckage.
Electoral violence remains a massive stain on our democratic process. When armed thugs dictate who can safely campaign, the voters ultimately lose. We see escalating insecurity across the country. It takes many forms, from targeted political thuggery to the devastating Plateau State massacre that recently claimed 54 lives. Nigerians are completely exhausted by the constant bloodshed.
Katsina holds significant political weight for the ruling party. An attack here sends a loud, dangerous message to the establishment. APC party officials quickly condemned the destruction. They demanded immediate arrests and a much heavier police presence for future grassroots rallies.
According to ongoing civil society reports from platforms like Premium Times, election-related violence frequently spikes in highly contested zones. Desperate politicians routinely weaponize poverty. They recruit unemployed youths, supply them with cheap weapons, and point them at political rivals. It's a destructive, cowardly tactic that ruins local communities.
The current administration must aggressively step up. Just days after Vice President Shettima returned from the UN General Assembly touting Nigeria's stability, incidents like this contradict that global pitch. You simply can't project national strength abroad while thugs smash campaign cars at home.
Security agencies need to move far beyond issuing empty press releases. We need swift, public prosecutions. Until the actual political sponsors face real jail time, the street-level violence will continue. Democracy should be a contest of ideas. It shouldn't be a brutal battleground of broken glass and burning cars.
