The conversation around fuel subsidies in Nigeria is heating up again. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has made some bold new statements. He recently promised to restore the petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027. This marks a massive shift in his political and economic platform. However, this sudden change has sparked intense debates across the nation. Therefore, many citizens are questioning the true motive behind his new stance.

The Presidency's Strong Reaction

The Presidency wasted no time responding to Atiku's proposal. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga released a very strong statement. He accused the former Vice President of playing desperate politics to gain power. Moreover, the Presidency described the old subsidy regime as wasteful and deeply corrupt.

They reminded Nigerians that the Petroleum Industry Act officially ended subsidies in June 2023. Therefore, they argued that returning to subsidies would destroy current economic reforms. The administration insists that selling petrol below market cost will easily bankrupt local refineries. You can read more about the Presidency's detailed response on The Guardian Nigeria.

Atiku's Changing Views on Subsidy

Interestingly, Atiku's current position contradicts his previous campaign promises. During the 2023 elections, he firmly agreed that the subsidy had to go. In fact, he previously pledged to eliminate it within his first 100 days in office. He believed that careful negotiations with organised labour would make the removal smooth.

Consequently, the ruling party now views his recent promise as highly opportunistic. They believe he is simply trying to win over frustrated voters ahead of the next election.

Demanding Accountability for Saved Funds

Despite the harsh criticism, Atiku continues to challenge the current administration fiercely. He recently demanded a thorough explanation for a N30 trillion windfall. This massive amount represents the estimated funds saved since the subsidy removal in May 2023.

His team insists that Nigerians have not seen the benefits of these harsh economic reforms. Furthermore, they argue that the government must openly publish how these saved funds are actively spent. Readers can learn more about this financial demand from Businessday NG.

Conclusion

The debate over petrol prices remains a highly sensitive issue for Nigerian households. High transportation and energy costs are causing real hardship nationwide. However, political promises must always make clear fiscal sense. The nation needs honest conversations about its current economic reality. Ultimately, Nigerians must carefully decide which path offers true sustainable growth.
