A simple luxury accessory just ignited a massive political firestorm across Nigeria. Margaret Obi is the wife of the 2027 NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi. She recently stepped out carrying a vibrant green Hermès Kelly 35 Malachite handbag. Almost instantly, social media exploded.

The uproar isn't just about a bag. It strikes right at the heart of Peter Obi's carefully cultivated political brand. For years, the former Anambra State governor built his entire reputation on extreme fiscal discipline. He famously claims to own just one wristwatch and a single pair of shoes. His supporters fiercely defend this frugal lifestyle.

Then came the airport footage. Observers quickly identified Margaret Obi's accessory. According to a report by Legit.ng, they matched it to the official Hermès website. The listed price sits at a staggering £131,938. That converts to roughly ₦237 million to ₦250 million at current exchange rates.

Critics wasted no time weaponizing the footage. Lere Olayinka, an aide to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, accused the Obi family of blatant hypocrisy. He pointed out the jarring contrast between a ₦250 million handbag and a politician asking ordinary Nigerians for small campaign donations. Media personality Daddy Freeze also weighed in. He stated he has no issue with wealthy people buying luxury goods. But he argued that projecting extreme modesty while surrounding yourself with immense wealth simply doesn't add up.

The situation quickly spiraled beyond just fashion critique. While we often see luxury items dominate weekly celebrity fashion moments, political spouses face a different level of scrutiny.

Not everyone believes the outrage is justified. Popular blogger Linda Ikeji stepped in to defend Mrs. Obi. As a known luxury collector herself, she dismissed the ₦250 million figure. She argued that nobody casually travels through a public airport carrying a bag that expensive. She urged Nigerians to relax and stop inflating the actual cost. Furthermore, no proof exists that Margaret Obi bought the item at full retail price. She could have received it as a gift or acquired it through secondary markets.

Peter Obi rarely responds to personal controversies. He usually focuses on political hurdles like his recent convoy clash in Benue State. This time, he couldn't ignore the noise. During an interview in Washington, D.C., Obi finally broke his silence.

He fiercely defended his wife's financial independence. According to Vanguard News, he stated clearly that his wife has her own business and money. He bluntly dismissed the critics by asking what his business is if she buys expensive items with her own cash. Obi pointed out that Margaret always enjoyed a sophisticated lifestyle. This started long before his political ambitions took center stage.

The defense makes practical sense. Peter Obi was a highly successful billionaire businessman long before he ever entered a government office. His family never lacked money.

Still, the optics present a real challenge. In a country grappling with severe economic hardship, optics matter just as much as reality. A politician running on an anti-waste platform will always face brutal scrutiny when his immediate family displays immense wealth. Whether this handbag controversy actually dents his 2027 presidential hopes remains to be seen. But it definitely proves that in Nigerian politics, every single accessory carries heavy weight.
