General Christopher Musa didn’t mince words. The rumoured coup plot against President Bola Tinubu wasn’t just cheap political gossip. It was a real, organized threat.

Speaking publicly on the issue, the Minister of Defence confirmed the grim reality. A disgruntled military colonel reportedly masterminded the entire operation. His primary motivation? He had simply failed his promotion exams to the rank of Brigadier-General.

Rather than accept this career setback, the colonel allegedly recruited other frustrated officers. Musa described these plotters as misguided opportunists. They were driven by selfish ambition and a longing for past military regimes, not by any legitimate national grievances.

The Scope of the Investigation

This plot went far beyond a few angry soldiers. The Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) remain deeply involved. They are actively tracking down civilian collaborators who allegedly funded or enabled the treasonous plan.

Authorities are taking a highly meticulous approach. Musa stressed that investigators want rock-solid evidence before making further arrests. They refuse to sweep innocent people into the dragnet simply by association.

Yet, some high-profile political figures are already deeply entangled. Former Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, faces serious allegations. Security operatives previously raided his Abuja home. The Federal Government later filed treason charges against him alongside other suspects. Sylva recently resigned from the ruling party and continues to strongly deny any involvement.

What Happens Next for the Suspects?

The Nigerian military isn't handling this lightly. They already have 16 officers facing a General Court Martial. Meanwhile, the government is prosecuting the civilian suspects in federal court.

Here is a quick breakdown of how this crisis unfolded:

Date

Key Event

October 2025

Defence Headquarters announces the arrest of 16 senior officers over alleged indiscipline.

January 2026

The military officially links the arrests to an aborted plot to overthrow Tinubu.

September 2026

The Defence Minister publicly details the plot, confirming ongoing DSS and NIA probes.

Musa made it perfectly clear that military unity remains entirely intact. He warned that anyone attempting to subvert Nigeria's democracy will face severe consequences. The accused plotters are currently fighting for their freedom in court.

For now, the government is sending a firm message. Treason will not be tolerated. As the trials progress, the entire nation is watching closely to see who else might be implicated.
