The traditional institution in Northern Nigeria has lost a major guiding light. Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, the 16th Emir of Gumel, is dead. He passed away on Thursday afternoon at a medical facility in Cairo, Egypt, following a prolonged illness. He was 83 years old.

The news has thrown Jigawa State into deep mourning. For 46 years, the Emir served as a pillar of stability and peace in his domain.

Malam Bala Ibrahim, the Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, confirmed the passing in a public statement. He expressed the profound sorrow of the state government. He noted that the traditional ruler dedicated his entire life to the betterment of his people.

A Legacy of Public Service

Born on December 12, 1942, Ahmed Sani II was an accomplished public servant long before taking the throne. He worked with the Nigeria Immigration Service and later served as the Commissioner for Information in the old Kano State from 1978 to 1980.

During his time in government, he helped establish major media outlets. He was highly instrumental in setting up The Triumph newspaper and CTV 67 (now ARTV). He also drove the rapid expansion of Radio Kano.

When his father died in late 1980, he returned home and ascended the throne on December 16, 1980. As Emir, his open-door policy broke years of rigid royal protocol. He wanted his people to reach him easily, and they did.

He actively championed education, youth development, and healthcare. At a time when the nation struggles with public health - where Nigeria records a low life expectancy of just 54 years - the Emir’s 83 years feel like a rare blessing to his community.

The Nation Mourns

Tributes are pouring in from all corners of the country. President Bola Tinubu released a heartfelt condolence message to the Gumel Emirate. The President praised the late monarch’s calm, inclusive leadership style. Tinubu noted that the Emir provided critical stability through decades of complex political transitions.

According to Premium Times, traditional rulers and state officials have been notified of the tremendous loss. The transition period for selecting the 17th Emir of Gumel will begin soon.

For now, the focus remains entirely on honoring a man who gave everything to his people. The Jigawa State Government and the Emirate Council will announce the final funeral rites in the coming days.
