One Arrested After Thugs Attack Peter Obi's Convoy in Calabar
Police have arrested a 27-year-old suspect after political thugs attacked Peter Obi's campaign convoy in Calabar, Cross River State.

Political violence disrupted the campaign trail on Wednesday. Suspected political thugs ambushed the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi in Calabar. The chaotic scene left campaign vehicles damaged and supporters injured. Fortunately, the Cross River State Police Command moved quickly. They dispersed the attackers and arrested one prime suspect at the scene.
The attack unfolded near the busy Watt Market area. Obi was visiting Calabar alongside his wife, Margaret, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso. The team had just finished visiting the palace of the Obong of Calabar. They were heading straight to the Metropolitan Hotel for a scheduled presidential town hall meeting.
Suddenly, armed youths descended on the procession. The situation escalated rapidly. Attackers smashed vehicle windscreens and caused widespread panic among the crowd. Obi's media aide reported that one supporter even suffered a gunshot wound during the terrifying ordeal.
Police officers on the ground quickly took control. They apprehended a 27-year-old man named Victor Edet Yellow-Duke. The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the arrest to journalists shortly after the chaos subsided. He stated that active investigations are already underway to track down the fleeing attackers. More importantly, the police are hunting for the political sponsors who funded the violence.
As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, political tensions are visibly rising. Grassroots campaigning often becomes a dangerous physical battleground. Obi is certainly no stranger to managing massive, unpredictable crowds. Whether navigating the Peter Obi Ikorodu City win stadium debate or dealing with previous road blockades in Benue State, security remains a constant challenge. According to reports from Punch Newspapers, the police strictly condemned the Calabar attack and promised severe consequences for electoral violence.
Despite the scary ambush, the NDC candidate refused to cancel his plans. Obi proceeded directly to the Metropolitan Hotel. He addressed the waiting party stakeholders and supporters exactly as scheduled, projecting calm after the storm.
The police have now deployed extra tactical teams across strategic locations in the metropolis. They want to ensure residents feel safe and prevent any copycat attacks. Democracy relies entirely on the safe exchange of ideas. Citizens and candidates alike deserve peaceful environments where they can gather without the threat of flying rocks and broken glass.
