About

Early Life and Education

Taiwo Babajide Al Hassan was born on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, a town in Ogun State, Nigeria. He was born to Taiwo Subaru Akande and Halimat Ayinke Jenrade. The name "Taiwo" is traditionally given to the firstborn of a set of twins in Yoruba culture, and he indeed had a twin brother named Kehinde. Multiple births ran strongly in his lineage; both his father and grandfather were also twins.

He began his education at Christ Church School in Ilaro before moving to Gazikia College in Lagos for his secondary education. Unfortunately, financial constraints prevented him from completing his secondary schooling. Undeterred, he enrolled at Yaba Technical College in Lagos, where he trained as an automobile technician. This technical training led to a 13-year career as an auto-mechanic at the Lagos State Water Corporation.

Cinematography, Career, and the "Odunfa Caucus"

While working at the Water Corporation, Ogogo pursued his passion for acting on a part-time basis under the mentorship of Awo Ademola Fagbemi. He officially entered the acting scene in 1981 and eventually resigned from his mechanic job in 1994 to focus entirely on his film career.

Ogogo became a towering figure in the Yoruba film industry. He was widely celebrated for his action-packed protagonist roles, his flawless delivery of Yoruba proverbs, and his commanding, authoritative screen presence.

He was famously a co-founder and pillar of the Odunfa Caucus, a highly influential theater and movie group based in Ebute-Metta, Lagos. Through this caucus, he worked closely with and mentored many prominent figures in the Yoruba movie industry. His closest collaborators and peers included:

  • Yinka Quadri: His long-time best friend, colleague, and co-leader of the Odunfa Caucus.

  • Abbey Lanre: A veteran director and close associate who completed the core leadership trio of the Odunfa Caucus.

  • Jide Kosoko: A veteran actor who frequently collaborated with him on major projects.

  • Sunny Alli and Yomi Fabiyi, who were heavily influenced by the Odunfa school of acting.

Despite a brief, highly publicized misunderstanding with Yinka Quadri, the two veterans famously reconciled in 2024 through the intervention of the legendary chanter Sulaiman Ajilara (Ajobiewe).

Notable Filmography & Awards

Ogogo featured in well over 100 movies throughout his decades-long career, contributing not just as an actor, but as a producer, director, and screenwriter.

Key Movies Include:

  • Owo Blow (1996)

  • Obinrin Sowanu

  • Omin (2008)

  • Elewon (2009)

  • Omo Ghetto (2010)

  • Tenant of the House (2019)

  • Anikulapo (2022) and its Netflix series Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre (2024), where he masterfully played the role of Alaafin Ademuyiwa.

His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 2023 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA) for his role in Anikulapo, and the City People Movie Lifetime Achievement Award.

Family and Personal Life

Taiwo Hassan was a devout Muslim and a polygamist. He was married to two wives ”Ajoke Taiwo and Taibat Taiwo”and was a proud father to several children. His daughters, Kira Taiwo and Haleemah (Lima) Taiwo, are well-known figures who have actively supported their father and managed his public communications during his health crises.

His Initial Sickness (Mid-2000s)

Before his recent illness, Ogogo suffered a massive and mysterious health scare between 2004 and 2007. During this period, he became severely emaciated, sparking rampant and cruel rumors across Nigeria. Rumors circulated that he had contracted HIV/AIDS, or that he had ingested cocaine that burst in his stomach while allegedly trying to traffic drugs.

However, these rumors were entirely false. Ogogo was actually suffering from a severe case of chronic ulcer and appendicitis that required extensive medical treatment and surgery. He eventually recovered fully, bounced back to a healthy weight, and returned to acting, firmly shutting down the false narratives about his health.

Stage-Four Cancer and Death (August 2026)

Tragically, Taiwo Hassan's health severely declined in 2026. In mid-August, his daughters, Kira and Lima, took to Instagram to make a desperate public appeal. They confirmed that their father had been diagnosed with stage-four cancer.

In a tearful video, Lima revealed that his condition had rapidly deteriorated and that several hospitals had turned him away due to the severity of the illness. The family explicitly stated they were not asking for financial donations, but were desperately seeking medical professionals or facilities capable of providing advanced cancer treatment to save his life.

The appeal triggered a massive outpouring of support, with over 500 offers of medical and traditional assistance coming in from Nigerians worldwide. His closest colleagues, including Yinka Quadri and Jide Kosoko, released a joint statement thanking the public but explaining that Ogogo's condition was too fragile to allow him to be moved from his current hospital to other facilities. They urged fans to rely on prayers.

Despite the exhaustive efforts of his family and medical personnel, Taiwo Hassan passed away on August 22, 2026, at the age of 66.

Legacy

Taiwo "Ogogo" Hassan's death marks the end of an era in Nollywood. He will be eternally remembered for his moral and disciplined on-screen persona, his rich command of the Yoruba language, and his role in building the foundation of modern Nigerian indigenous cinema.
