Ojo Arowosafe, universally known by his screen name "Fadeyi Oloro," was a legendary Nigerian actor and cultural icon. He was widely regarded as one of the most prolific antagonists in the history of Yoruba cinema. Known for his fierce costumes and seamless recitation of deep Yoruba incantations, Arowosafe was the quintessential villain that thrilled audiences during the golden era of Nigerian television and film.
Ojo Arowosafe was born on September 15, 1957, in Igbara Odo, a town in Ekiti State, Nigeria. He was born to Mr. John Arowosafe and Mrs. Adolaowo Arowosafe. Growing up in a culturally rich environment in Ekiti, he absorbed the deep traditional folklore, language, and chants that later defined his acting career.
Arowosafe began his formal education at St. Paul Catholic School in Ekiti State for his primary studies. He subsequently proceeded to Timmy Agbale Grammar School for his secondary education.
Arowosafe’s acting career took off in the 1980s, officially joining the Nollywood scene around 1985. He skyrocketed to national fame when he starred in the classic Yoruba television series Arelu. His flawless portrayal of the dreaded herbalist and warlord "Fadeyi Oloro" made the character a household name, so much so that the moniker stuck with him for the rest of his life.
Following the success of Arelu, he went on to star in another classic, Yanponyanrin, cementing his typecast as Nollywood's most fearsome traditional villain. Over the decades, he featured in over a hundred Yoruba movies, setting the standard for traditional action films in Nigeria.
As a pioneering figure in the Yoruba movie industry, Fadeyi Oloro worked closely with the late Jimoh Aliu (who created Arelu) and shared the screen with numerous Nollywood veterans, including contemporaries like Adebayo Salami and Babajide Kosoko.
Ojo Arowosafe was married and had children, keeping his family life largely away from the public eye.
In his later years, the veteran actor battled severe health challenges. He was diagnosed with a kidney-related ailment that kept him out of the movie industry for a prolonged period. Tragically, Ojo Arowosafe passed away on March 7, 2023, at the age of 65. His death was officially confirmed by his daughter, Fasunwon Oluwafunke.
