Phone Seller Arrested as Lexus Drags Lagos Officer to Death

A routine stop-and-search in the Egbeda area of Lagos turned deadly on September 26. A 20-year-old phone seller struck and killed a police sergeant with his Lexus ES 350.

Olusola Olumide faces serious charges after dragging Sergeant Johnson Okediji several meters down Olugbede Street. The incident happened around 2:20 pm.

According to Lagos State Police Commissioner Fatai Tijani, officers flagged down Olumide’s vehicle. The young driver initially complied and stopped. But as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver's window, the Lexus suddenly accelerated.

The car knocked the officer down and pulled him underneath. According to a report by The Nation, onlookers and fellow officers shouted and chased the car, but the driver kept moving. Police eventually cornered and arrested him shortly after.

Sergeant Okediji suffered severe head trauma and multiple fractures. Medics rushed him to a local clinic before transferring him to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). Doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

His body now rests at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary awaiting an autopsy.

The Driver's Defense: "My Brakes Failed"

Olumide deals in phones and laptops. He strongly denies hitting the officer on purpose. Instead, he blames a sudden mechanical failure.

"I was trying to stop the vehicle, but it didn't stop," he told reporters. He pointed to scrapes he got during the chaos. "He was in the front of the car, the brake failed, and it hit his leg, dragging him".

The young man said his mother bought the Lexus just last month. He visited a mechanic the day before the crash to replace the brake pads.

Despite those repairs, he noticed the brakes slipping after buying fuel earlier that afternoon. He planned to take the car back to the workshop later that day. The crash happened before he got the chance.

"I have a lot of regrets about hitting an officer of the law. I am very pained about that," Olumide said.

This tragedy highlights the daily dangers on Lagos roads. It also comes as authorities tighten their grip on traffic violations.

During the same press briefing, CP Tijani announced police had impounded over 40 vehicles this week for covered or missing number plates. Drivers are already navigating tough conditions. Make sure your vehicle is roadworthy and your papers are valid. Also, stay sharp about road-related fraud, like the recent wave of fake FRSC traffic fine texts.

While investigations continue, the damaged Lexus remains parked at the police station. Mechanical experts will likely inspect the vehicle to verify Olumide's claims.

For now, a young man sits in a cell. Meanwhile, a police officer's family plans a funeral.
