Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu is a prominent Nigerian politician, accountant, and the 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, assuming office in May 2023. Often referred to as the "political godfather" of Lagos and a master strategist, he has profoundly shaped Nigeria's modern political landscape over the last three decades.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu was born on March 29, 1952, into a Yoruba merchant family. His mother, Abibatu Mogaji, was a highly influential trader and the Ìyál'ọ́jà of Lagos. He spent his early years in southwestern Nigeria before migrating to the United States in the mid-1970s. While in the US, he attended Richard J. Daley College (formerly Southwest College) in Chicago and later transferred to Chicago State University. He graduated with honors in 1979, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Administration with a focus on Accounting.
Following his graduation, Tinubu built a robust career in the corporate sector. He worked as an accountant and auditor for top American consulting firms, including Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, and GTE Services Corporation. Returning to Nigeria in the 1980s, he joined Mobil Oil Nigeria, where his financial acumen saw him quickly rise through the ranks to become a company executive and Treasurer.
Tinubu transitioned from the corporate world to politics in 1992, successfully running for the Senate to represent the Lagos West constituency under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) banner. His tenure was brief, as the military regime of General Sani Abacha dissolved the Senate and annulled the 1993 democratic elections. In response, Tinubu became a founding member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), actively campaigning for the restoration of democracy. His pro-democracy activism led to his arrest and subsequent exile in 1994. He remained a vocal critic of the military government from abroad until he returned to Nigeria in 1998, following Abacha's death.
Upon returning, Tinubu ran for the governorship of Lagos State on the Alliance for Democracy (AD) platform and won the 1999 election. Serving two consecutive terms until 2007, his administration is credited with transforming Lagos. He introduced extensive reforms in public finance, significantly increasing the state's internally generated revenue through stringent tax collection, and initiated major infrastructural, transportation, and urban planning projects. He also famously engaged in a prolonged struggle with the federal government under President Olusegun Obasanjo over state rights and local council allocations.
After stepping down as governor, Tinubu's influence expanded exponentially. He was instrumental in consolidating various fragmented opposition parties to form a "mega-party," the All Progressives Congress (APC), in 2013. As a central national leader, he orchestrated the alliance that propelled Muhammadu Buhari to the presidency in 2015, marking the first time an opposition party unseated an incumbent Nigerian government.
In 2023, running on a "Renewed Hope" agenda, Tinubu campaigned for the highest office and was elected as the President of Nigeria. Since taking office, his administration has initiated bold macroeconomic and fiscal reforms aimed at overhauling the national tax system and setting a $1 trillion GDP target by 2030.
Throughout his expansive career, Tinubu has built powerful political networks. He worked closely with former President Muhammadu Buhari, playing a pivotal role in his election victories. His political protégés include his successor in Lagos, Babatunde Fashola, and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who served as his Commissioner of Justice during his governorship. He currently works alongside his Vice President, Kashim Shettima. Beyond politics, his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, is a formidable figure in her own right, having served as a three-term Senator representing Lagos Central.
President Tinubu has received numerous honors and chieftaincy titles across Nigeria. As the Head of State, he holds the nation’s highest honor, Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR). In recognition of his contributions to governance and democracy, he was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Law Degree by Abia State University.
