Nigerian Troops Rescue 87 Hostages in Major Offensive
The Nigerian Army successfully rescued 87 hostages during fierce, coordinated operations across Niger, Kogi, and Kebbi states.

The Nigerian Army recently secured a massive victory in the ongoing fight against rural terrorism. In a series of coordinated operations across Niger, Kogi, and Kebbi states, troops successfully rescued 87 civilian hostages.
The military conducted these fierce rescue missions between October 6 and 7. The operations highlight the changing tactics of our armed forces in tackling the persistent kidnapping crisis.
The Standoff at Kundu Village
The most intense firefight happened in Niger State. Terrorists had captured 84 local residents and held them captive in Kundu village. When the troops moved in to secure the area, a heavy gun battle erupted. The army successfully overpowered the attackers, neutralizing one suspected terrorist and rescuing all 84 villagers.
Unfortunately, this victory came at a terrible price. The army lost a brave soldier during the intense exchange of gunfire. Following the rescue, soldiers recovered several items from the criminal camp, including two locally fabricated Dane guns, a motorcycle, and a mobile phone.
These rural communities have suffered tremendously from banditry. The sheer scale of kidnappings often draws comparisons to the heartbreaking terrorist massacre that left 54 dead in Plateau State. Returning 84 people safely to their families is a rare, much-needed moment of relief.
Securing Kogi and Kebbi
While the Niger State operation handled the bulk of the hostages, troops were equally active elsewhere. In Kogi State, personnel attached to Sector 1 of Operation Whirl Stroke intercepted another kidnapping ring. They successfully rescued three victims along the notorious Okene bypass. Security forces are still tracking down the fleeing suspects to prevent any future ambushes on that highway.
Meanwhile, troops in Kebbi State faced an overwhelming threat. The Forward Operating Base in Maiyama came under a massive assault by roughly 100 heavily armed terrorists. The soldiers of the 8 Division Strike Force Battalion held their ground, repelled the massive attack, and recovered several weapons.
The Broader Security Picture
The military is clearly ramping up its offensive posture. Relying solely on defensive checkpoints no longer works against mobile, heavily armed terror groups. The Nigerian Army is now taking the fight directly to the kidnappers' hideouts.
This proactive approach requires massive resources and manpower. It also brings renewed attention to recent national defense strategies, including the Defence Minister's call for mandatory military training for all Nigerians.
Securing the nation requires constant vigilance. The successful rescue of 87 people proves that our security forces can dismantle these criminal networks. The focus must now shift toward securing these vulnerable rural areas permanently so the terrorists cannot simply return once the troops leave.
