18th Headies Postponed: Toronto Finale Moved to April 2027
The 18th Headies Awards won't happen this year. The Toronto finale has been pushed to April 2027 to expand pre-award events across Nigeria and Canada.

If you’ve already booked your flight to Canada for the 18th Headies, you need to call your airline. The biggest night in Afrobeats is hitting pause.
Organizers just announced a massive shift for the 18th edition of the Headies Awards. Instead of holding the ceremony this year, the grand finale will now take place on April 10 and 11, 2027.
The venue remains the same. Toronto is still hosting. But fans and industry executives will have to wait another six months to see who takes home the coveted plaques.
Why The Delay?
The Headies Academy dropped the news on their official Instagram page. They didn’t blame visa issues or logistics. Instead, they pointed to expansion.
The statement explained that pushing the date allows them to scale up their pre-award activities. The "Road to The Headies" campaign will now feature more events across Nigeria and Canada.
They want to deliver a bigger program. According to the organizers, they have a responsibility to pull off an event larger than anything they’ve done before.
This ambition makes sense. The 18th edition carries the theme "Africa to the World." After two successful runs in Atlanta, moving the show to Canada is a massive leap. They clearly want the Toronto debut to be flawless.
Travel Plans Ruined
While the expansion sounds great for the brand, the reality is messy for attendees. Moving an international award show scrambles schedules.
Many fans and industry insiders had already secured Canadian visas. Flights were booked. Hotels in Toronto were reserved. The organizing committee actually acknowledged this fallout. They apologized directly to guests who now have to cancel or modify their travel arrangements.
Getting a Canadian visa from Nigeria isn't exactly a walk in the park. For some, those approved visas might expire before April 2027 rolls around.
What to Expect in April 2027
Despite the frustration, the stakes for the 18th Headies remain incredibly high. The nominations reflect a fiercely competitive year in African music.
Fans are particularly invested in the Next Rated category. We are also watching the heavyweights clash for Album of the Year. The lineup features artists who have dominated global charts and local airwaves alike.
It’s been a wild year for Nigerian artists. We've seen massive wins, international tours, and plenty of drama. For instance, the industry is still talking about Odumodublvck’s recent feud with influencer Freyy. Even Poco Lee's brief UK detention saga kept fans on edge. Both artists are nominated this year, adding even more buzz to the upcoming ceremony.
Here is a quick look at some of the major categories waiting to be decided in Toronto:
Category | Top Contenders |
Next Rated | Fido, Fola, Llona, Mavo, Shoday |
Album of the Year | Catharsis (Fola), Clarity of Mind (Omah Lay), Morayo (Wizkid), No Sign of Weakness (Burna Boy) |
Best Male Artiste | Adekunle Gold, Asake, Burna Boy, Rema, Wizkid |
Best Female Artiste | Ayra Starr, Qing Madi, Tems, Teni, Tiwa Savage |
The Waiting Game
The Headies promised to release a fully updated calendar soon. This will detail all the "Road to The Headies" events leading up to April 2027.
Until then, the debates over who deserves to win will just drag on a bit longer. The artists get a few extra months to campaign. The fans get more time to argue on social media.
Toronto is still getting the Afrobeats treatment. It’s just going to take a little longer to get there.
